A-level results day, Clearing, and word of mouth recommendations.
😊 Welcome
This week we focus on what is, whether you are a university applicant, an adviser or an admissions officer, probably the busiest, most exciting and most stressful day in the whole calendar: A-level results day.
In particular, we look at what happens, and how to prepare for the best and the worst outcomes!
I also have a favour to ask. It's not a big favour, but it’s one that could have a big impact.
Because your recommendation matters!
✍️ Preparing for A-level results day: Clearing and Confirmation
A-level results come out on Thursday 14th August, and while not everyone applying to university in the UK takes A-levels, this is a super-important date, because it’s the date when many students will find out whether they’ve been accepted to university, and it’s the date when Clearing opens, and all those last minute opportunities come in to play.
It is a day of high stress for many students, parents and teachers, and there are an insane array of possible outcomes for students in different scenarios
I’m afraid this isn’t a short piece, but I’ll do my best to simplify it down so that you know what could happen and how this might impact you, so you can start planning; for the best and worst outcomes.
Please do forward it on to any students and parents you know who might find it useful!
📢 Top 10 tips for results day and Clearing
While we are on the subject of results day, why not check out my top tips for the day; a sort of highlights package of the stuff you need to think about before the day, and how to approach the day itself!
💡 And finally…
I’m a member of a couple of super-useful Facebook groups. One is specifically for UCAS advisers and admissions experts. The other is mainly for parents of university applicants.
I do my best to provide answers, advice and support to both groups when I feel I’ve got a useful contribution to make.
But the one thing I can’t do is heavily promote the Better Uni Choices website or newsletter. As well as being against the spirit of the group rules, it would get kind of irritating to members!
The other day, a member of one of these groups was asking for resources to help students with the new UCAS Personal Statement, and the first comment was an adviser who suggested my very own Personal Statement guide.
That comment alone resulted in 450 people accessing the guide over the following couple of days.
Word of mouth recommendations really are far more powerful than anything I can do to widen awareness of the resources I provide.
You all have networks, social media, professional groups, friends and colleagues who could find these useful, and so I’d love it if you would share any of the following resources so that more people can access them!
Thank you in advance for your support!
That’s all for this week!
Jonathan
